A collision between a DAF tanker and a motorcycle claimed two lives and injured one person on Wednesday along the Lapai-Lambata Road in Niger State. The accident involved a tanker with registration number MNA 356 XB and a Bajaj motorcycle driven by Baba Tanaye, who was accompanied by two passengers, Abdullahi Tanaye and Abdulfahunu Isah.
According to a statement by Wasiu A. Abiodun, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the motorcycle attempted to overtake a vehicle but was struck by the tanker, causing the rider and passengers to fall beneath the oncoming truck. Tragically, the two passengers died instantly, while the rider suffered severe injuries and was taken to IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna for treatment.
The statement further noted that the tanker driver fled the scene.
It read: “On 30/10/2024 at about 0700hrs, an accident occurred along the Lapai-Lambata road involving a DAF tanker truck with Reg. No. MNA 356 XB and a Bajaj motorcycle ridden by Baba Tanaye of Lapai, along with two passengers, Abdullahi Tanaye and Abdulfahunu Isah. Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcycle, in an attempt to overtake another vehicle, was struck from the side, causing the occupants to fall under the tanker. Sadly, both passengers died on the spot, while the rider sustained serious injuries and was referred to IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.”
The police added that efforts are underway to locate the driver of the tanker.
