The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating violent attacks on its members in Ward 7, Akure South, Ondo State.
The PDP claimed that the attacks were carried out by APC thugs with the assistance of police officers, describing the incident as a clear act of intimidation.
“We strongly condemn the violent attacks by APC thugs and police in Ward 7, Akure South of Ondo State earlier today on our Party members and supporters who were in a peaceful meeting,” the PDP stated.
According to the party in a statement on Friday, the intimidation would not deter its members from supporting the party’s governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi.
“No amount of intimidation and harassment will stop the people from voting for our Party and our guber candidate, Agboola Ajayi.”
The PDP reiterated that such acts are unacceptable and would not be tolerated, stressing that the people of Ondo State would not be silenced.
“No amount of violence, intimidation, or harassment will stop the people from exercising their constitutional right to vote for the candidate of their choice, His Excellency, Agboola Ajayi, and our Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on November 16, 2024.”
The party warned that the attacks showed the threats facing Nigeria’s democracy under the current government.
“Such attacks on innocent citizens are a stark reminder of the risks that our democracy faces under the failed All Progressives Congress (APC).”
The PDP called on authorities to swiftly intervene and bring those responsible to justice. “It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such incidents do not recur.”
The PDP also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. “We stand strongly with the people of Ondo State and reaffirm our commitment to democratic values.”
The PDP concluded by stating their intention to continue advocating for peaceful elections.
“We will continue to advocate for free, fair, and peaceful elections, where citizens can exercise their right to choose their leaders without fear or coercion.”
