The Nigerian Senate is set to screen seven ministerial nominees today (Tuesday), following their nomination by President Bola Tinubu for confirmation.
This was confirmed in a statement from Senator Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, on Monday.
According to Lado, the newly appointed ministers, already cleared by the Department of State Services (DSS), visited his office yesterday to submit their curriculum vitae before the deadline. “The nominees are now submitting relevant documents as part of the first steps in the screening and confirmation process,” the statement said.
The Senate is expected to screen and confirm the nominees in accordance with Section 147 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
Last week, President Tinubu announced the dismissal of five ministers in a statement from the presidency. Those dismissed include Uju-Ken Ohanenye, former Minister of Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John, former Minister of Tourism; Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education; Abdullahi Gwarzo, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development; and Jamila Ibrahim, Minister of Youth Development.
The newly nominated ministers, who await Senate confirmation, are Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Dingyadi, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Jumoke Oduwole, Idi Maiha, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, and Suwaiba Ahmad.
The presidency explained that the dismissals and new appointments are part of “eight far-reaching actions to enhance the administration’s capacity for optimal efficiency, in line with the President’s commitment to deliver on promises made to Nigerians.”
