The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding a recall of Nivea Roll-On deodorant by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) due to safety concerns.
NAFDAC identified the specific product as the Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, labeled “48H Protection in African Climate,” with batch number 93529610.
According to NAFDAC, the EU’s RAPEX in Brussels recalled this product, manufactured in Germany, due to the presence of a chemical banned in cosmetics for its harmful health effects.
NAFDAC reported that the recalled Nivea product contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical banned in cosmetics due to risks of reproductive harm, potential health impacts on unborn children, and potential for skin irritation and burns.
The agency advised, “Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers should exercise caution throughout the supply chain to prevent the import, distribution, sale, and use of the specified Nivea Roll-On from the affected batch.”
NAFDAC also urged, “Members of the public who possess this batch should stop its use or sale and submit any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse effects from the use of regulated products to their nearest NAFDAC office.
