An Equatorial Guinean court has ordered the imprisonment of Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, amid a scandal involving corruption and alleged extramarital relationships. Engonga is currently held at Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.
Last week, Engonga was arrested following allegations of having illicit relationships with the president’s sister and the wives of prominent figures. These accusations surfaced after anti-corruption officials searched his home and office during a fraud investigation, reportedly uncovering sex tapes revealing his affairs with several married women.
The videos reportedly depict interactions with high-profile individuals, including the wife of his brother, his cousin, the sister of Equatorial Guinea’s president, the Director-General of Police’s wife, and the wives of over 20 ministers.
On Wednesday, media outlet SaharaReporters announced that Engonga had been dismissed from his role and replaced by Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo. The scandal was first revealed during an investigation into fraud allegations against Engonga, a 54-year-old economist. Dubawa, a fact-checking organization, confirmed that Engonga is indeed facing corruption charges and remains in custody at Black Beach Prison.
